Took a walk through the MoMA yesterday. Spent time with Duchamp’s ‘Fresh Widow’, and couldn’t get this quote of his out of my head:
I was interested in ideas – not merely visual products. I wanted to put painting once again at the service of the mind.”
This trip was part of an effort to make peace. The first of many small good-byes to the things in New York that make living here worth it. These were supposed to be one-sided conversations.
Then a tragedy occurred. The strange death of a man only 36 years old. Affectionately, Marcel was open on my lap when the news came through, and I was glad to have Duchamp’s letters. Even gladder to have his readymades, his happy little thoughts, within arm’s reach (plus a subway ride and short walk). It does more than beautify, art does.
